Latest Chatter Surrounding Vancouver Canucks Forwards
Rumour: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman talked about some possibly big news regarding J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson during Saturday’s Headlines segment on Hockey Night Canada.
Saturday Headlines: Miller trade was close, but something happened and he will play. (People asked if he vetoed…no, I don’t believe that is issue). Some teams have permission to talk to him; Pettersson asks to stay.

Analysis: Friedman mentioned that Miller was initially held out of the lineup prior to the big matchup against the Edmonton Oilers. However, a deal seemingly fell through and he was inserted into the lineup.
The Sportsnet insider said people asked if Miller had veto the trade. However, Friedman mentioned that was not the case. It was also mentioned by Friedman that he believed the New York Rangers were the team the Canucks were talking to.
As for Pettersson, the Headlines segment mentioned that he would like to stay with Vancouver. It also seems like the feeling is mutual from Canucks’ management.
This is just the latest chapter in the months-long saga between two of the Canucks top players. We’ve mentioned in previous editions of NHL rumours that all solutions regarding the pair are seemingly on the table.
Another note in the segment was that the Canucks have warned other teams about tampering. Vancouver reminded other teams that permission is needed in order to have trade talks.
Is it Miller Time (For a Trade)?
It appears that general manager Patrik Allvin has a preference to move Miller at the deadline. The East Palestine, Ohio native has a contract that is a bit easier to move. Miller does have a full no-movement clause, but his contract is $8 million per season.
This deal is seemingly easier move than Pettersson’s average cap hit of $11.6 per season. The Swede’s no-movement clause doesn’t kick in until July 1, but it would likely be harder to move his cap hit.
Miller has had an up-and-down season that included a 10-game leave of absence for personal reasons. He started off hot, but had gone five games without a point before getting two assists on Saturday.
Friedman mentioned that Miller will likely be asked to waive his no-trade clause once a deal draws closer. We’ve mentioned that Miller would likely try to get back to the United States in a new deal.
What It Means
This drama will continue to hang over the Canucks until something is done. Vancouver has struggled, but is only one point behind the Calgary Flames for the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
It’s been a disappointing season where the Canucks were supposed to be a contender. However, there’s still time to salvage the campaign and reach the post-season.
A deal involving Miller or Pettersson will likely get something big return. However, something is going to have to break soon. We may see a deal soon, but this will be a lingering question until the dust settles.
