Even though Jimmy Butler returned to the Miami Heat recently, trade rumors have persisted. ESPN insider Shams Charania has reaffirmed that Butler’s position on trade requests has not altered, despite him rejoining his teammates. In fact, after meeting with Heat owner Micky Arison, he allegedly “doubled down” on his demand to get away from South Beach.
Heat Intensify Trade Efforts for Jimmy Butler
Meeting of the Minds
“Since Jimmy had his meeting with Micky Arison on Thursday, there is no doubt an uptick in (trade) discussions around Butler.
The Heat shifted into a new gear after that meeting.”

“It is not fixable as it stands right now between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. … I’m told he doubled down in his meeting with [Micky and Nick Arison],” Charania said.
“They’ve operated as a team looking to a find a trade for Butler between now and the Feb. 6 NBA Trade Deadline,” Charania added. “But they want to have their needs satisfied as well in terms of their desire for role players that can come in, contribute, potentially having draft capital … they want to go get players that they feel can help this team compete. … This going to be a fluid situation, but both sides are prepared for a level of uncomfortableness moving forward.”
Butler didn’t play much on the court with the team since his seven-game suspension lifted. Over the past few games, he has only averaged 13 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds for Miami. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Heat have intensified their efforts to let go of the irate star as the NBA trade deadline on February 6 approaches.
Trade Talks “Finally” Ramp Up
In reality, by revealing a confidential phone call he had from an unnamed organization, Windhorst somewhat fuelled the rumors. He continued by saying that the team he was speaking with had to end the call immediately to deal with something “bigger.” He then raised the rumor that a Butler trade involving many teams might be imminent.
“I had a team on Friday call me & say, ‘Hey, this team is trying to dump some salary’… they all of a sudden had to end our phone call to go do something ‘bigger,’” Windhorst said. “I speculate that it has to do with (Jimmy) Butler and not just a direct Butler trade, but three and four-team trades.”
A “Messy” Divorce
Butler and the Heat’s relationship appears to have reached an irreparable stage. Jake Fischer revealed a few weeks ago that Butler had taken separate planes and skipped the team’s shootarounds on “multiple occasions” throughout the years. Naturally, Butler’s side denied the allegations, but it’s clear that things were out of hand in this relationship.
In the end, a lot of outside opinions from the national media have resulted from the two sides’ eventual divorce.
Additional Thoughts
The Miami Heat are getting tired of holding onto Jimmy Butler; therefore, it’s interesting to learn that they are stepping up their trade efforts for him. There must be a sense of urgency to speed up this trade, because everyone wants this prolonged process to end. This probably means the Heat are looking for innovative ways to bolster the squad around Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, who are both already the team’s pillars.
This move demonstrates the Heat’s resolve to permanently cut Butler for good. In addition, adding star power or acquiring important role players is important to the Heat. In the end, it appears that the two parties will eventually split up.
