Tua Tagovailoa is nearing the end of his rookie deal. The Miami Dolphins quarterback will play the 2024 season on a fifth-year option to conclude his contract.
Tagovailoa hosted an inaugural youth football camp on Oahu on Saturday. He didn’t provide much details when asked about extension talks with the Dolphins.
“They’ve been good. Right now, I’m letting my agent handle that,” Tagovailoa said, per Hawaii’s KHON2. “I’m focused on my family, I’m focused on continuing to better myself, better my craft and we’ll talk more about that when that time comes. For now, exciting times ahead. That’s for sure.”
Last offseason, Tagovailoa faced many questions about his football football after sustaining two reported concussions in 2022. Observers wondered if he could, or should continue to play.
The former No. 5 pick returned to play every game last season. Tagovailoa set career highs in completion percentage (69.3), passing yards (4,624), and passing touchdowns (29).
Yet he threw two interceptions in a Week 18 game against the Buffalo Bills that determined the AFC East champion before going 20-of-39 for 199 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in a first-round playoff loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.
At at end of February, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he “absolutely” believes the organization will sign Tagovailoa to a long-term deal.
“My belief has always been strong from Day 1 in Tua,” McDaniel said at the NFL Scouting Combine, per ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques. “It’s stronger than it was the first day I met him.”
Tagovailoa told KHON he’s a “very private person” who prefers to keep his offseason preparation
