After being “mostly absent” for the start of the Dolphins’ offseason training program, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has reportedly returned to the facility amid he and the team’s contract talks.
Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, “Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is in the building for the start of Dolphins OTAs, per source. The QB is slated to become the next quarterback to receive a big payday, but the sides are in negotiations. Tagovailoa said he was planning on attending the workouts.”
The former No. 5 pick is looking to cash in on his next deal after putting up career numbers in 2023 and helping Miami reach the playoffs with an 11-6 record.
Last season was the first time since turning pro that Tua was able to stay healthy and play in all 17 games for the Fins.
That resulted in a league-leading 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. However it wasn’t enough to change the Dolphins’ fortunes in the postseason.
Miami was blown out by the eventual back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the wild card round, 26-7. A game that saw Tua complete just 20-of-39 passes for 199 yards while throwing a touchdown, a pick and taking two sacks.
The Pro Bowl QB is rumored to have received at least one contract offer — which logic dictates was less than Jared Goff’s $50-plus million per year since he’s yet to sign.
