Tua Tagovailoa did not participate in the Miami Dolphins’ second training camp practice on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Tagovailoa partook in limited action without working 11-on-11 drills. Although he was on the field the following day, the quarterback didn’t throw.
Yianni Kourakis of WPBF 25 News shared footage of Tagovailoa watching his Dolphins teammates on Thursday.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Wednesday that Tagovailoa’s practice participation will likely remain limited amid contract talks. The quarterback is entering the final year of his deal.
“I think it’s important to acknowledge that Tua’s in the midst of a contract negotiation, and that’s important to him and the football team,” McDaniel said, per Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports. “That being said, we communicate very well. It’s very fluid. We’re taking it day by day. Today I expect it to be kind of like OTAs, and we’ll move on from there.”
After multiple concussions placed his NFL future in doubt, Tagovailoa came back to play every game last season. The former No. 5 pick completed 69.3 percent of his passes for a league-leading 4,624 passing yards and the second-most yards per attempt (8.3) behind Brock Purdy.
Tagovailoa could follow Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence as the next quarterback to receive a sizable extension. Fellow members of his 2020 draft class, Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, netted big paydays last year.
While he’s with the team, the 26-year-old could be “holding in” until he lands a new deal.
