It’s no secret Harrison Butker’s commencement speech at Benedictine College has stirred up a lot of drama in the NFL world. The veteran kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs has been heavily criticized this month because of the comments he made.
During this Wednesday’s media availability, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about Butker’s speech.
McDaniel said players have to understand that what they say publicly can stick with them for a long time. In some cases, it can linger forever.
“I think you do have to open the eyes of the players to their platform if they’re new to the situation,” McDaniel said. “I think you have to understand that what you say publicly can be fragmented and last with you forever.
“I really emphasize that whatever you’re going to say, you better believe it. You just try to educate people to understand the consequences of whatever they do. They have the freedom of choice, and if they want to go that direction, go right ahead.”
That’s a very fair and mature response from McDaniel, who is considered one of the most beloved coaches in the league today.
Butker, meanwhile, will most likely face plenty of questions about his graduation speech between now and the start of the 2024 season.
At the end of the day, Butker is entitled to share his opinions with the rest of the world. On the flip side, people don’t have to agree with what he says.
