Mike McDaniel may come off as a joking, kind of nerdy guy at the podium but the Dolphins head coach reportedly has no problem calling out his players.
During a recent appearance on Gillie and Wallo’s “Million Dollaz Worth of Game“ podcast, Miami star receiver Tyreek Hill revealed how McDaniel came after him for his performance in last season’s playoff loss to the Chiefs — specifically regarding the L’Jarius Sneed play.
The play against Sneed. The Chiefs, everybody see this play against the Chiefs. When the [expletive] slammed me to the floor? He called me out. He like, ‘Reek, bro, you’re supposed to be the [expletive] best player in the [expletive] league and you got this guy putting hands all over you like that. We pay you all this money for what?’ And for me, I love [expletive] like that. I’m gonna take that [expletive] to heart and I’m gonna get better from it. That’ll never happen again to me in my life, man. You feel me?
If a [expletive] cannot hold me accountable, I feel like I’m not gonna be able to get better, you know what I’m saying? Like, obviously, the coaches can bypass that, you know what I’m saying, and just be like, ‘Ah, he’ll get better from it.’ But if he’s not saying nothing, like the other guys in the locker room, they’re gonna look at it as, ‘Oh, if Reek can do it, I can do it.’ And that’s not getting the team better.
No matter how some football coaches come off on the exterior it’s important to remember that they’re all fiery and competitive in their own ways.
As great as Hill is, he was almost a non-factor in the Fins wild card playoff loss. They’ll need more from him if they’re going to get to where they want to be among the AFC contenders.
