The Miami Dolphins have had a backup quaterback problem for quite a long time — which is less than ideal considering their starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has missed numerous games during his five year career with various ailments.
This year alone, Tagovailoa has missed five matchups, with a sixth likely coming this Sunday when the Dolphins travel to New Jersey to face the New York Jets in a must-win scenario.
This past Sunday against the Browns, backup quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley made his case to be the longterm backup behind QB1 with a fantastic performance when his team needed it most.
Miami Dolphins Week Seventeen MVP – Tyler Huntley
Earlier in the year, the Dolphins claimed Huntley off of the Baltimore Ravens practice squad when Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve with his latest concussion situation. Huntley was pressed into action early when former backup quarterback Skylar Thompson suffered an injury of his own.
The results were disappointing, but that was to be expected since Mike McDaniel’s offense is a complicated one to master, and Huntley had little time to get himself ready for action.
Fast forward to this past Sunday against the Browns, and with 3 months of study time under his belt, Snoop came out slinging it to the tune of 22 of 26 passing (with a spike, a drop and two throwaways), for 225 yards and a touchdown, while adding 7 rushes for 52 yards and a touchdown.
In the pouring rain of a cold December day, Huntley proved he can lead a competent offense in less than perfect conditions when Tagovailoa is not available. Will he remain in Miami next season and beyond? If he puts together another efficient performance against the Jets, he may have earned that right.
