After spending the 2023 season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, former NFL head coach and longtime assistant Joe Philbin has a new job in the NFL.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are hiring Philbin to be their senior offensive assistant. Per the report he is expected to be “lend experience” to Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce.
“The #Raiders are hiring former #Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin as their new senior offensive assistant, source said. After spending time as the #Cowboys OL coach and the Ohio State senior analyst, Philbin is back in the NFL to lend experience to Antonio Pierce,” Rapoport wrote.
Philbin has 40 years of football coaching experience between college and the NFL. His biggest break came in 2012 when he was hired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
In three-plus seasons in Miami, he went 24-28 and was fired in the middle of the 2015 season. His most recent head coaching stint came as interim head coach of the Green Bay Packers following Mike McCarthy’s dismissal in 2018.
Philbin’s most recent NFL stint reunited him with McCarthy as offensive line coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He served in the role until 2022, when several other high-ranking members of the coaching staff were fired.
Philbin took on the role of analyst with the Buckeyes last season, which allowed him to work with Buckeyes wide receivers coach Brian Hartline – who Philbin had previously coached with the Dolphins.
Some of Philbin’s other stops include Iowa, Harvard, Northeastern, Ohio, Allegheny, Merchant Marine, WPI and Tulane.
