Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross released a statement following the team’s loss to the New York Jets to end the 2024 season.
The Miami Dolphins saw their 2024 season come to an inglorious end on Sunday as they lost to the New York Jets in Week 18. The loss ended a streak of four-straight winning season and ensured the team would not make the playoffs after back-to-back postseason appearances the two prior years. Fans have been frustrated by the regression seem by the team in 2024, and there have been plenty of vocal calls for changes with the team, especially when it comes to head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier.
Sunday night, following the team’s loss, owner and managing general partner Stephen Ross released a statement about the 2024 season and the direction of the team heading into 2025. For fans hoping to see massive changes, the statement did not bring with it good news.
“I want to thank the players and coaches for their hard work through the 2024 season, as well as the fans for their support,” Ross’s statement began.
“As the owner of this team, I am ultimately accountable for our successes and failures,” he continued. “We fell short of our expectations this season, and I understand and share in the frustration in our performance on the field.
“As we now look towards 2025, our football operation will continue to be led by Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel with my full support. Their positive working relationship is an asset to the Dolphins, and I believe in the value of stability. However, continuity in leadership is not to be confused with an acceptance that status quo is good enough. We will take a hard look at where we have fallen shot and make the necessary changes to deliver our ultimate goal of building and sustaining a winning team that competes for championships.”
Grier joined the Dolphins in 2000 as a scout, moving over from the New England Patriots. He moved up the scouting side of the front office until he was named the team’s general manager in 2016. He assumed full control of the football operations in 2018 with the departure of Mike Tannenbaum as the executive vice president of football operations. Miami is 75-73 since Grier was named the GM in 2016.
McDaniel was hired as the team’s head coach in 2022. He had spent five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers prior to the move, serving as their run game coordinator and offensive coordinator during that time. He has also worked in the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, and Atlanta Falcons organizations. He has a career 28-22 record with the Dolphins.
