The Chicago Bears are hiring Ben Johnson to be their next head coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon.
Chicago was one of two teams, along with the New Orleans Saints, that interviewed Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver for their head coaching vacancy. While the Saints are reportedly set to interview Weaver again Wednesday, it looks like the only opening with the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator in the mix.
Johnson, 38, has been largely considered the top candidate of the entire coaching carousel after spending the last three seasons as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator. Detroit’s defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is reportedly a favorite to fill the Saints’ vacancy.
If Weaver — who is no guarantee to even accept a head coaching offer — stays in Miami, it’d be good news for the Dolphins and Mike McDaniel, who has had three defensive coordinators in as many seasons in Miami.
In Weaver’s first season with the Dolphins, the team finished No. 4 in yards allowed and No. 10 in points allowed.
