Following yesterday’s New Year’s Day terror attack on the French Quarter of New Orleans, the city, law enforcement, and the two teams playing in the Sugar Bowl, the Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish decided that the best course of action would be to delay the game by one day. To ensure the safety of the teams, fans, and stadium staff for today’s game, expanded security sweeps were conducted at the Ceasars Superdome.
As an independent, Notre Dame, with their 11 and 1 record, did not play in any championship game and had to make the playoffs as an at-large team. As an “at large” team, the Fighting Irish were also not afforded a bye week. Notre Dame defeated the Indiana Hoosiers in the first round of the playoffs 27 to 17 to earn their spot in the quarterfinals.
The 11 and 2 Georgia Bulldogs earned their spot in the playoffs by winning the SEC Championship game over the Texas Longhorns 22 to 19. The championship game was also the second time the Bulldogs defeated Texas this season. Georgia’s two losses came at the hands of the Ole Miss Rebels (28-10) and the Alabama Crimson Tide (41-34).
