The Miami Dolphins are bringing back safety Elijah Campbell.
Monday’s start to the 2025 NFL free agency period opened with the Miami Dolphins focused on their offense, with the team signing quarterback Zach Wilson, guard James Daniel, and guard/tackle Larry Borom. Tuesday’s day two has the team looking to address their defensive secondary. Earlier today, reports indicated the team was adding safety Ifeatu Melifonwu from the Detroit Lions. Now, a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicates the Dolphins are re-signing safety Elijah Campbell.
The deal is a one-year contract worth $1.9 million.
Campbell, entering his sixth year in the league, has served as a core special teams player for Miami while adding in spot duty at safety. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent signed by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, but was released at the end of training camp. After a couple of seasons in the AAF and XFL, Campbell returned to the NFL in 2020, joining the New York Jets practice squad. He was waived at the end of the 2021 preseason, with the Dolphins claiming him.
He has played in 58 games, starting three times. He has 40 tackles, two passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He appeared in all 17 games for Miami last year, starting one time, but played only 76 defensive snaps compared to 290 special teams plays.
Miami is seeing a turnover of their safety position this year, with former starter Jevon Holland agreeing to a deal with the New York Giants on Tuesday and Jordan Poyer an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Campbell has stated he wants an opportunity to have a bigger defensive impact, including potentially starting. This could be his chance to force his way into the lineup.
