The undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins are perhaps the greatest team in NFL history. But if you ask Dolphins legend Larry Csonka, he’ll apparently yell in your face if you add the word “perhaps.”
It certainly appears that that’s what he did at a recent event, where Csonka got heated and started swearing at a reporter who asked him how the NFL “named” the ’72 Dolphins the greatest team in history.
“Named the greatest team? We took the goddamn thing, that’s how it happened. I’m tired of people telling me how they ‘named’ us. They named us (expletive). We took it,” Csonka said.
The 1972 Dolphins went 14-0 in the regular season en route to winning the Super Bowl and finishing the season 17-0. No other team has won every single game in a season before or since.
Taking to X on Thursday, Csonka apologized for losing his cool in the exchange.
“I did lose my cool here but I stand by my point – we achieved perfection and are the only team to do so in the first 100+ years of professional football. My teammates and I already knew this whether the NFL recognized it or not. That said, I am grateful the NFL finally ratified our historic achievement,” Csonka said.

Until another team comes along and surpasses the Dolphins’ 17-0 championship season, Csonka and the rest of the Dolphins are going to keep proudly stating it.
