The University of Miami on Thursday officially named Duke associate head coach Jai Lucas its new head men’s basketball coach.
Lucas, 36, is known as an elite recruiter who helped bring some of the nation’s top recruits to Duke and, before that, Kentucky.
One Nike EYBL head coach described Lucas as a “monster recruiter” in part because of his ties to the JL3 Nike EYBL team.
In an unusual move, Lucas will take over the Hurricanes after Duke’s regular season ends on Saturday. Led by projected No. 1 NBA Draft pick Cooper Flagg, Duke is a national title contender.
“We are excited to welcome Jai and his family to the Hurricane Family,” Miami AD Dan Radakovich said in a statement. “Jai is an innovative coach, a relentless recruiter and proven talent developer whose knowledge and passion for the game resonated throughout the interview process. He has coached at some of college basketball’s most storied programs under tremendous head coaches.
