An Oklahoma State sideline reporter and radio host hurled unsubstantiated allegations at Miami’s football program.
Triple Play Sports Radio host Robert Allen made bold claims about the Hurricanes without the slightest semblance of evidence. He accused the program of making impermissible contact with Cowboys players Ollie Gordon and Nick Martin.
“I wouldn’t root for Miami if they were playing the Kremlin,” Allen said on 365 Sports. “That’s the most tampering, cheating institution out there in the NIL era.”
Perhaps he was thinking of the Miami Dolphins, who lost two draft picks for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton. Owner Stephen Ross was suspended and fined $1.5 million for making impermissible contact with the quarterback and head coach.
Miami’s women’s basketball program was also the first penalized for an NIL-related violation. Coaches inadvertently set up contact between a booster and recruits who signed with the team.
While Miami’s football program has been embroiled in past scandals, Allen isn’t reacting to any recent news. He appeared to just recklessly call them cheaters without proof.
It’s also far trickier to determine what crosses the line in the early stages of an NIL era that lacks true regulation.
Miami went 7-6 in Mario Cristobal’s second season as head coach. Allen clearly won’t be cheering for the when they open the 2024 season against the Florida Gators on Aug. 31.
