A Miami Hurricanes fan went viral yesterday for wearing a jersey and full pads while watching the team against Bethune Cookman. But while some people found it goofy, there’s actually a pretty serious story behind it.
After the Overtime account on X mocked the fan for thinking he’s on the team, Brody Logan of KSEE 24 News pointed out that the fan, named Shelton Douthett, is well-known for doing this during game.
Logan and many other fans in the know said that while Douthett’s brother was in the hospital with pneumonia, he told him it would be fun to dress in a jersey and pads for a game once he got better. Douthett’s brother tragically passed away and Douthett has worn the pads with his jersey to every game he’s attended since to honor his brother’s memory.
“His name is Shelton Douthett. When his brother was in the hospital with pneumonia he told Shelton it would be fun to dress in a full jersey and pads for a game when he got better. His brother died soon after. So he dresses in a full pads, in his brother’s memory, every game,” Logan wrote.

Brody Logan and many others have admonished Overtime and similar aggregators for doing no research and taking no responsibility for getting things wrong.
As for Shelton Douthett, he had one of the best seats in the house as the Hurricanes crushed Bethune Cookman in a 48-7 rout.
