What the Hurricanes are getting with the former UGA quarterback.
A day after Carson Beck officially entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, the former Georgia Bulldogs starter is off the market, committing to the Miami Hurricanes.
Just yesterday, multiple outlets reported that Beck was expected to enter the portal and would automatically become the cycle’s No. 1 overall transfer player. Hours later he did just that with a “do not contact” tag which typically signifies that an athlete knows what school(s) they are looking at.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel tweeted that “Miami looms as the favorite” to land Beck as the Hurricanes return only two scholarship quarterbacks in Emory Williams and Judd Anderson and expect incoming freshman Luke Nickel, the USA Top 100 National Player of the Year to be on campus when classes begin on January 13th.
Beck, who was last seen in action on December 7, 2024 in the SEC championship game versus the Texas Longhorns, injured his throwing elbow while attempting a pass in the last play of the first half. He was 7/13 for 56 yards at the time of his injury and was replaced by sophomore quarterback Gunner Stockton.
After Beck and his family consulted with several doctors, renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed successful surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on December 23, 2024. ElAttrache also performed the same procedure on San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Brock Purdy, who has shown no ill effects since his surgery in March of 2023.
Shortly after on December 28, he declared for the NFL Draft. Per a UGA athletics release, he is expected to make a full recovery, and will resume throwing in the spring. However, it remains unseen if he will be a full participant for Miami come spring practice.
On the season, the Jacksonville, Florida native out of Mandarin High School completed 64.7% of passes, threw for 3,485 yards, tallied 28 touchdowns, and was intercepted 12 times. On the ground, Beck totaled 71 yards and one score with a long run of 14 yards coming against Tennessee.
With Georgia off to a 3-0 start, Beck threw seven touchdowns, zero interceptions, and 680 yards in his first three games until he faced off against the Alabama Crimson Tide defense and threw for 439 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. In that game, the Bulldogs trailed by as many as 28 points before Beck led a furious comeback that saw his Bulldogs take a 34-33 lead with 2:31 to play.
The comeback fell short when Beck threw his final interception in the endzone as he targeted former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver, Colbie Young.
In 2023 when UGA finished 13-1 with a resounding 63-3 Orange Bowl victory over Florida State, Beck enjoyed throwing a career-high 3,941 yards. His 72.4% completion rate as a junior was also tops in his career as a starter. He amassed a 24-3 record during his impressive Bulldogs career, highlighted by a 459-yard performance against Mississippi State and two five-touchdown games, all coming in his final season against Tennessee Tech and Georgia Tech.
As a prospect, Beck was rated the fifth-best quarterback in the 2020 class by 247. The former four-star recruit also played AAU basketball and was an SEC baseball prospect. He was named Mr. Football in Florida for 2018 after leading Mandarin High School to a Class 8A state championship.
At 6’4’’ and a shade under 220 lbs., Beck stands tall in the pocket, makes good use of pump fakes to move defenses, and throws one of the better deep balls in college football. He is an underrated athlete but is more than capable of picking up yardage and extending plays with his legs. Canes fans can watch for offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to call some designed runs for the fifth-year senior.
With Miami expected to return three starters from last season’s offensive line while inserting former TCU center James Brockermeyer – the No. 1 interior offensive lineman to enter the transfer portal, Beck looks to have a veteran group block for him and returning running backs Mark Fletcher and Jordan Lyle.
Prior to Beck’s announcement, Miami also landed two receiving targets in former LSU wideout CJ Daniels whose best season came in 2023 for the Liberty Flames when the 6-foot-2, 205-receiver caught 55 passes for 1,067 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Two and a half weeks after Daniels’ commitment, Miami received a pledge from former Tulane tight end Alex Bauman. In 38 games for the Green Wave Bauman cashed in on 13 touchdowns on 63 receptions and 610 yards. He is expected to fill the role vacated by Elijah Arroyo who declared for the NFL Draft on December 31.
While at Georgia, Beck was the backup to Stetson Bennett for both of the Bulldogs’ national title-winning teams in 2022 and 2023. He commits to Miami after Cam Ward’s record-setting Heisman campaign in which he set school records for passing yards, touchdown passes, and most 300-yard games in a single season.
